Immigration expansion plans: increasing Canada’s population.

Good news for people wanting to immigrate to Canada. On October 31st the Canadian Government released the new immigration level plans for 2019-2021. These plans will increase the number of immigrants yearly. Immigration minister Ahmed Hussen said: Canada will take in 40,000 more immigrants in 2021 than it plans to accept this year. In 2017 Canada accepted 300,000 immigrants and increased that amount in 2018 by 10,000. The amount of new immigrants is divided into four categories: economic, family, refugee and humanitarian.

The economic category is the most important for Canada. This category alleviates the aging population and diminishing birth rates. Many developed countries have a negative population growth. While Canada is not negative it may soon reach a zero growth rate. The plan to bring in new skilled workers will supposedly help Canada maintain its global economic status. Strengthening the economy by helping company’s battle shortages and gaps in the market.

Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Ahmed Hussen, said “Under this plan, Canada will welcome more talented workers with the skills and expertise our economy needs, reunite more family members and accommodate more refugees looking to start new lives,”

The new plan is part of a long-term strategy that will enable Canada to remain competitive in the global market and continue welcoming skilled workers.

The liberals wish to take the process slowly, increasing the percentage of immigrants by small quantities each year. The reason is to ensure that new immigrants are settling in properly. Canada spends large amount of resource on integration settlement services, which are paid for by citizen’s taxes. Therefore, if the best option for Canada’s long term growth is immigration, the government should ensure immigrants are properly acclimatized.

Canada continuously looks for a wide variety of skilled workers. The in demand list of occupations included under the Express Entry program are as follows:
  • Business, Finance and Administration occupations
  • Natural and applied sciences and related occupations
  • Health occupations
  • Occupations in social science, education, government service and religion
  • Occupations in art, culture, recreation and sport
  • Sales and service occupations
  • Trades, transport and equipment operators and related occupations
  • Occupations unique to primary industry
  • Occupations unique to processing manufacturing and utilities

Another positive aspect of Canadian immigration, is that Canada helps skilled workers bring their family over from their home country. Canada is highly motivated in reuniting families. Allowing spouses, children, and grandparents to apply for immigration.
